The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliev and the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Philippe Lefort, discussed the Karabakh conflict and ways of resolving it when they met yesterday in Baku. Lefort was this week on a visit to the region and had earlier been in Yerevan for meetings with the Armenian leadership.

The European Union is currently considering a number of initiatives aimed to support the peace process, although it is not directly involved in the mediation. political editor said that whilst the visit was overshadowed by the ongoing controversy over the release of Ramil Safarov all the parties concerned are aware of the need to move the discussion forward and Lefort's visit offered an opportunity to look beyond the immediate impasse.
