An Armenian army lieutenant has been captured by Azerbaijani forces. Armenia and Azerbaijan are giving different versions to the events that led to the capture of the officer.
The Azerbaijani side broke the news first, reporting that "at around 05:45 on Sunday, August 23, a sabotage and reconnaissance group of the Armenian Armed Forces attempted to sabotage the Goranboy region of the frontline."
The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry said "the enemy was forced to retreat with losses", but that during the fighting a senior lieutenant, Gurgin Alberyan, was taken prisoner and was currently being interrogated.
Later on Sunday, the Armenian Defence Ministry Spokesperson, Shushan Stepanyan wrote on her facebook page that Lt Alberyan had lost his way during bad weather conditions and described the report that he was part of a sabotage incursion as disinformation.
The Goranboy Region is to the north of Nagorno-Karabakh. A strip in the Southern part of the region has been controlled by Armenian forces since the 1989-94 Karabakh War.
